How to cook Banana Bread Oatmeal
Step 1: Boil the water.
In a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
Step 2: Add the oats.
Once boiling, add old-fashioned oats. Lightly stir to ensure all oats are submerged.
Step 3: Simmer without stirring.
Cover the pan and reduce the heat to low. Let the oats simmer gently without stirring until the water is absorbed and the oats are light and fluffy.

Step 4: Incorporate flavors.
Remove the pan from heat. Stir in ½ mashed ripe banana, 1 tablespoon of packed brown sugar, a pinch of nutmeg, and a pinch of cinnamon until well combined.

Step 5: Serve with toppings.
Transfer the oatmeal to a bowl and top with your favorite additions, such as banana slices, pecans, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or a splash of milk.
Tips for Well-balanced Banana Bread Oatmeal
Use Ripe Bananas: The riper, the better! Overripe bananas are naturally sweeter and mash more easily, giving your oatmeal that classic banana bread flavor.
Choose Old-Fashioned Oats: These provide a house favorite texture for a hearty and creamy oatmeal. Quick oats can work in a pinch, but you may lose some of the chewiness.
Adjust Sweetness to Taste: Depending on how sweet your banana is, you might want to adjust the amount of brown sugar or leave it out entirely. Taste as you go!
Make It Creamy: For extra richness, replace half the water with milk.
Don’t Skip the Spices: Cinnamon and nutmeg are key to achieving that warm, cozy banana bread flavor—don’t be afraid to sprinkle a little extra!
Get Creative with Toppings: Add your favorite nuts, a drizzle of syrup, or even a dollop of yogurt to make this bowl your own.
Use the Stove: In this recipe, you’ll notice that we cook the oatmeal on the stove. You can cook yours in the microwave, but the texture is typically better on the stovetop as it doesn’t get as gummy. It leaves you with those individual grains rather than one big gloop of mush.
Oatmeal Topping Ideas
One of a house favorite things about this Banana Bread Oatmeal is how customizable it is. Here are a few topping ideas to take your bowl to the next level:
- Fresh Fruit: Top with sliced bananas, fresh berries, or diced apples for added sweetness and texture.
- Nuts and Seeds: Add a crunch with chopped pecans, walnuts, or a sprinkle of chia seeds.
- Drizzles: A swirl of maple syrup, honey, or even almond butter adds an indulgent touch.
- Spices: Sprinkle extra cinnamon or nutmeg on top for a stronger banana bread vibe.
