String beans vs. Green beans

Green beans and string beans are actually the same things! So if you see frozen string beans, you are safe to buy that kind.

The name String bean Is actually somewhat outdated. It refers to the thin, fibrous “string” that used to run down the length of the pod and that had to be removed by hand, bean by bean, like snap peas. Also known as snap beans.

But in the 19th century, these strings were eliminated thanks to careful breeding, according to Serious Eats. These days, only heirloom varieties contain strings.

You may also see thin green beans (also called haricots verts) which are a French style of green beans. These work great as well!

Frozen Green Beans Recipe Ingredients

Frozen green beans seem like they’d be enough on their own, but they’re actually even better with some light seasonings. Here’s what you’ll need to grab from your pantry to make these

  • Frozen green beans – You can use any frozen green bean for this, including the steamable kind. However the steamable bags come in special packaging and may cost more, so keep an eye out.
  • Avocado oil – You can use sesame oil, olive oil, or vegetable oil instead. We like avocado oil because it has a neutral taste. You can even melt butter in place of the oil. Use the melted butter the same way as the oil.
  • Coarse kosher salt – You can use coarse sea salt instead. Stay away from table salt though — it is much better for seasoning a finished dish than for cooking.
  • Ground black pepper – we like to use this Pepper grinder For cooking. Fresh pepper makes a huge difference in flavor.
  • Garlic powder & onion powder – Make sure they aren’t expired for a house favorite taste. Most spices need to be replaced after 6 months.

If you prefer, you can use a seasoning salt like Lawry’s Or Krazy Jane’s Rather than the salt, pepper, garlic, and onion powders. Italian seasoning will give it great flavor as well.
